Periodontal disease, aka gum disease, occurs when bacteria invade and attack the supporting bone and soft tissues around the teeth. Periodontal disease begins as gingivitis which is an inflammation of the surrounding soft tissues. Gingivitis is reversible. When left untreated, gingivitis progresses into periodontitis which results in irreversible bone loss and eventual tooth loss.

There is no cure for periodontitis; but with early detection and treatment, the progression of the disease can be stopped. Treatment of periodontal disease usually involves a nonsurgical procedure known as Scaling and Root Planing (sometimes referred to as a deep cleaning). A dental crown, aka a cap, can be used for a number of reasons but one of the most common uses is to restore a tooth that is significantly damaged or decayed. An extension of a dental crown is a dental bridge, which is a custom-made restoration that can restore form and function by replacing a single tooth or multiple teeth in a row. An infected or badly damaged tooth can sometimes be very sensitive and painful. When left untreated, the tooth may even 'die' and need to be extracted. To avoid extraction, the infected or injured tissues need to be addressed via root canal therapy. A root canal can usually be completed in one or two visits with the use of local anesthesia. Unlike the reputation that it has, a root canal is often completed with zero to minimal discomfort.
